Greetings to readers of the aniramia.ru health blog!

Today we’ll talk about leg cramps. Before we talk about help during a painful condition, you need to understand the causes of leg cramps and how to avoid this.

It is rare to find a person of older and middle age who would not know what a cramp is.

Leg cramps usually occur suddenly with acute pain of varying intensity in the lower leg, calves, feet, toes, rarely in the hips and can last from a few seconds to several hours.

At the same time, the leg muscles involuntarily tighten, contract, and cannot relax. Blood stops circulating in the “stuck” muscle group - it hurts us a lot. And from this, the body strains the muscles of the legs even more. We are trying to relax the muscle, but the body has worked on its tension and resists. There has been a breakdown. Vicious circle.

Spasms of leg cramps vary in type:

Tonic cramps - prolonged muscle tension leading to hardening and severe pain Clonic cramps - repeated short-term spasms of tension and relaxation of different or the same muscle groups (example: tic of the eyelid or part of the face) epilepsy attack) Generalized spasms - many muscle groups of the human body are involved in a spasm. This species is very dangerous, accompanied by loss of consciousness and requires immediate emergency medical attention (example: convulsions with tetanus)

Occasional seizures of leg cramps are usually associated with improperly selected shoes, prolonged stay in a static pose. Frequent leg cramps may indicate a specific disease.

Causes of Leg Cramps

Before talking about help during leg cramps, you need to know the causes of this condition. After all, a cramp is not a separate disease, but only a consequence of some underlying disease. Knowing the true cause, adequate measures can be taken to prevent leg cramps.

If we talk about diseases that are accompanied by leg cramps, then this:

Brain tumor Stroke Epilepsy Spasmophilia Acute infectious diseases (flu) accompanied by high temperature Acute poisoning, including alcohol intoxication Closed injuries Neurological diseases Polyneuritis Diabetes mellitus or prediabetes Vascular diseases - venous insufficiency, thrombophlebitis, varicose veins glands (hypoparathyroidism - parathyroid disease) Anemia

But at the same time, periodic cramps in the legs can appear if there is:

Flatfoot Clubfoot - the heel looks inward and thus causes not only curvature, but also pinching of blood vessels and nerves in the ankle joint. Close shoes are also incorrectly selected in lifting. More often this is observed in pregnant women. Muscle overwork due to improper body position and impaired blood circulation in the muscles (working on legs, standing in line, sitting on squats (working on beds in the garden), long sitting, uncomfortable sleeping position in bed). High body temperature (hyperthermic convulsion) with infectious diseases, heat stroke. Genetic predisposition - convulsive readiness in native people for the same strong stimuli is developed. Stay in a stuffy room. Nervous stress. At this time, an increase in the hormone of adrenaline occurs, rapid breathing occurs, and the result is a decrease in carbon dioxide in the muscles, which means muscle spasms or cramps. Lack of exercise or a sedentary lifestyle. Acidity and slagging of the body (protein diets) Heavy weight Hormonal disorders Incorrect use of birth control drugs Dehydration due to diuretics, heavy sweating, diarrhea Overcooling (sudden immersion in ice water) Lack of trace elements in the body: calcium (hypocalcemia), potassium (hypokali) magnesium (hypomagnesemia). Lack of vitamins D, E, A, B.

How to eat to prevent leg cramps

Most often, leg cramps arise from a lack of vitamins D and group B in the human body, especially B6, and due to a mismatch with the normal amount of trace elements Mg (magnesium), Ca (calcium), K (potassium).

A major role in restoring the balance of vitamins and microelements is played by rational, balanced and fortified nutrition. When composing the menu, you need to take this into account and include in your diet products containing the necessary trace elements, as well as vitamins.

I offer you a list of foods in which vitamins and trace elements are most found to help cope with leg cramps.

Ca - Calciumdairy products: milk, cream, sour cream, dairy, yogurt, hard cheese, feta cheese, cottage cheese, sesame, soy, nuts, legumes, garlic, mustard,
Mg - magnesiumwalnuts and pine nuts, cashews, pistachios, whole grains, cereals, especially buckwheat, soybeans, wheat bran, beans, peas, beans, seaweed, dried fruits: dried apricots and prunes, figs and dates, mustard
K - potassiumdried apricots, raisins, prunes, grapes, pine nuts, almonds, hazelnuts potatoes sea kale
vitamin Dfish, cod liver, seafood, fish oil, milk, butter, egg yolk
vitamin b6beef meat and liver, fish, buckwheat, peanuts, walnuts, bananas

Mineral deficiency is sometimes so great that routine dietary improvement is not enough. And then they resort to the help of medical mineral and vitamin complexes. But here is the difficulty, both a drawback and an overabundance of these drugs is not beneficial to the body. Therefore, it is better to consult with a specialist what of vitamins and minerals and when you should take it. You can read about what vitamins you lack in this article.

To absorb calcium, you need daily walks. Sunlight or ultraviolet light contributes to the production of vitamin D by the human body, which in turn helps to absorb calcium. Such a useful cycle. It is especially important to monitor the fortified diet during pregnancy, with intensive sports and taking certain medications. Drink enough clean water. How, how much and when to drink water can be found here. The consumption of sugar and coffee with the appearance of seizures should be reduced to a minimum. Use daily a little natural honey, because it helps to retain minerals in the body, especially calcium. Magnesium is taken with vitamin B6. It should be noted that the absorption of magnesium after 6 pm is reduced. Therefore, you need to take it in the morning. Magnesium is better absorbed when a person moves, rather than lying. Calcium and vitamin D are drunk together and in the evening for better absorption by bone tissue.

Leg cramps are characterized by a very painful and unexpected spasm, which the victim is not able to predict and control.

The muscle instantly becomes stiff, as if "wooden." If the cramp catches in motion, a person may even fall if he does not have time to find a suitable support.

The most common and painful are calf spasms, but cramps of the hips, fingers or feet are also not uncommon and bring no less unpleasant sensations.

From time to time, spasms occur in any person. If some part of the body stays in an uncomfortable position for a long time, then the muscles are stressed and a cramp occurs. You just need to change the position and gently massage the area that has fallen, and everything will quickly pass by itself. If leg cramps cause anxiety regularly, there is a serious reason to think about their causes (possibly starting thrombosis) and report your concerns to the doctor.

It is important to consider the most common causes of seizures.

Loss of body fluid: Leg cramps are one of the first signs of dehydration. With high physical exertion or on a hot summer day, the body loses a significant amount of water through sweat. Together with the liquid, there is a loss of vital trace elements and electrolytes that maintain the balance of the body. The balance is disturbed, and spasms begin. Lack of important minerals and vitamins For the body to function properly, certain groups of vitamins and minerals are needed. It is especially worth highlighting magnesium, calcium and vitamin D, which are important for the transmission of nerve impulses. Lack of vitamins provokes malnutrition, smoking, abuse of sweets and coffee. There are also a number of drugs that interfere with the full absorption of vitamins. It is important to take these medications separately from foods and medicines that contain calcium and magnesium. Improper nutrition. If the percentage of protein in the food you eat is increased, calcium is absorbed by the body much worse. Stay clear of advertised protein diets or take extra calcium tablets. Otherwise, instead of a slim figure, you will have health problems. Temperature drops With strong or sharp cooling, there is a high probability of muscle cramps. Try to avoid prolonged exposure to cold and swimming in cold ponds. Overvoltage. If you like to play sports, be sure to dose and control the load. Do not forget about warming up the muscles before training and, if possible, avoid hard physical work. Diseases People suffering from varicose veins, thyroid gland diseases, brain tumors experience convulsions much more often than others. Various injuries and flat feet are also risk factors. If you have such a chronic disease, be sure to regularly see a specialist. Stress Frequent emotional stress adversely affects the nervous system and contributes to the rapid elimination of calcium from the body. Try to be as less nervous as possible, learn to relax.

Why do cramps occur at night?

Night cramps happen very often. As a rule, a cramp occurs after the body has been in one position for a long time, and then the pose has changed. Stiff muscles overexert, and a spasm occurs, accompanied by very severe pain.

A sleeping person wakes up sharply, suffers pain due to aching muscles, and then may not immediately fall asleep again. If night cramps bother too often, they can even cause insomnia.

Convulsive cramps occur at any age, but more often people of advanced years suffer from them. The fact is that over the years, chronic diseases accumulate, and nerve endings become more sensitive. Therefore, the health of older people should be treated with special attention.

Ambulance for cramping

During a cramp, a person experiences severe pain and wants to eliminate it as soon as possible. To quickly relieve spasm, you can:

Sit on a chair or bed, bring your legs down, lower them to the floor and wait a couple of minutes. In this position, blood circulation will quickly recover. Gently massage the muscle (only from the bottom up), warming it, and then lie down in bed with a pillow or folded blanket under your feet.

Never prick a spasmodic muscle of a calf with sharp objects (for example, needles), you risk damaging nearby nerves and blood vessels.

The use of traditional medicine

If you are a fan of folk treatment, try using a couple of recipes to prevent seizures. Do warm compresses with vodka and apple cider vinegar, rub your feet daily with fresh lemon juice. To relieve spasm and reduce pain, you can use maid oil: gently rub it with a tense muscle.

How to avoid seizures?

It is impossible to predict the onset of foot cramps, but there are ways to significantly reduce their likelihood

First of all, pay attention to what you eat.

Try to eat more foods high in potassium, magnesium, and calcium. These micronutrients are rich in dairy products, cottage cheese, buckwheat, spinach, beans, cheese, carrots, nuts, rye bread, bananas, bran, as well as lean meat and fish. With a significant lack of necessary vitamins and minerals, take special supplements, but only with the permission of a doctor.

Secondlyfight your bad habits.

Quit smoking and alcoholic beverages, do not eat a lot of flour, sweets, limit the use of caffeine. Try not to get nervous over trifles.

Thirdly, do not forget about physical activity, regular movement and reasonable sports loads. Do not sit for long in one position, do not let your legs run numb. Get up, bend more often, do exercises every day, perform simple stretching exercises. You can even start attending special classes in physiotherapy.

Fourth, use the healing power of nature. Every day, make it a rule to take a bath with herbal decoctions (for example, nettle, elderberry, yarrow, horsetail, hawthorn), and then do a light massage. This procedure, based on the contrast of temperatures, perfectly relaxes the tensed muscles of the legs. Just be careful: the water should not be too cold or hot. If you suffer from varicose veins, be sure to consult your doctor before starting the procedure.

And finallyRefrain from long walks and hard physical work. Do not wear too high heels and tight, uncomfortable shoes. All this provokes the occurrence of painful cramps.

Causes of leg cramps. Features of cramping in the lower extremities in adults and children. What methods will help eliminate pain, do I need to seek help from official medicine?

  1. Main reasons
    • Among women
    • In men
    • In children
    • In older people

  • What to do
    • Folk remedies
    • Medical preparations
    • Exercises
  • Leg cramps are reflex uncontrolled involuntary contractions of the muscles of the lower extremities, accompanied by numbness or acute pain. More often spasms occur in the calf muscles, less often in the front or back of the thigh.
The most dangerous and painful generalized cramps are when all the muscles of the lower extremities contract. Why brings legs together, and in what ways can you stop muscle contractions?

The causes of cramps in the legs are many. These include violations of the water-electrolyte balance of the body, neurological disorders, lack of nutrients, acquired diseases and congenital anomalies. More often spasms in the lower extremities appear at night.

    For what reasons cramps women

Very often, young healthy women are themselves to blame for the appearance of seizures. In pursuit of beauty, they switch to diets that have a negative effect on health. Fashionable unloading diets recommend limiting the types of products in the diet, which provokes a lack of nutrients in the body.

With a lack of magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium, ionic compounds are formed in the intercellular space, which act excitingly on nerve fibers. An impulse of nerve tissue causes muscle contraction. Especially from this point of view, mono-diets are dangerous - chocolate, caramel, coffee.

For weight loss, women often use foods and drinks that have a diuretic and choleretic effect. In this case, the water-electrolyte balance is disturbed, which leads to a violation of metabolic processes in muscle fibers. In addition, beneficial trace elements are also excreted in liquid. The reasons for the development of seizures are the same as with a limited diet.

The cause of cramps in the legs at night can be an increased load. It is provoked by high heels that women do not take off, regardless of weather conditions. Seizures occur due to prolonged uncomfortable position of the limbs. At night, the muscles relax, and reflex contractions appear.

During pregnancy, the causes of leg cramps are:

    • A change in body position due to a shift in the center of gravity,
  • Squeezing veins with a heavy uterus, which is why blood circulation in the lower extremities is impaired.
  • During menstrual bleeding, the body loses fluid, the blood thickens, and peripheral circulation is disturbed. That is why women often have varicose veins.

Leg cramps due to stress are more common in women than in men. Their nervous system is less stable, and even minor emotional experiences can provoke seizures.

Causes of leg cramps in men

In men, cramps are more painful, as the muscles are denser, and develop more often in the thigh area - along the front and back surfaces.

One of the causes of leg cramps at night in men is professional activity. For long-distance truck drivers, convulsions are caused by prolonged forced immobility of the legs, and in tractor drivers and bulldozer drivers due to vibration load. Men are more often engaged in hard work, more actively involved in sports. With forced immobility or increased load in the muscle tissue, lactic acid accumulates, which is a mediator of inflammation.

If women try to dress in accordance with weather conditions, then men who are easier to tolerate temperature changes bathe in cool ponds and neglect underwear - especially young and healthy. Due to hypothermia, the muscles are reduced, spasms cause severe pain. Especially dangerous are such cramps when swimming - even a swimmer who stays confidently on the water can get confused and die.

Another common cause of lower limb cramps in men is being overweight. Men are more frivolous about physiological parameters; they are not confused by a large belly. Meanwhile, in this case, the veins are compressed in the same way as during pregnancy, and the blood circulation of the lower extremities is impaired. In addition, lipid plaques appear earlier due to the predominance of fatty foods in the diet.

Smoking and alcohol abuse have a negative effect on peripheral blood supply. The vessels are spasmodic, the tone of the walls is broken, nerve fibers are excited, which provokes the appearance of spasms in the legs.

What makes the legs cramp in children

Factors that provoke cramps in children in the legs may be a lack of nutrients in the body and an increased load on the legs during the day. If parents adjust their diet and daily routine, then unpleasant symptoms will not appear, as their causes will disappear, and treatment for leg cramps will not be needed.

If spasms in the lower extremities are caused by health problems, then you can not do without the help of a pediatrician. In children, convulsions can develop:

    • Due to intrauterine hypoxia and birth injuries,
  • With congenital pathological processes in the brain - with vascular anomalies, neoplasms, with epilepsy,
  • After infectious diseases - meningitis, encephalitis, sepsis,
  • With perinatal encephalopathy - in infants,
  • After traumatic brain injury,
  • With metabolic disorders in the body caused by organic pathologies of a different nature.
  • Muscle cramps in the lower extremities in children can develop periodically:

    1. As a reaction to vaccinations or as a side effect on the use of medicines,
  • With intoxication of the body caused by inflammatory processes - against a background of high temperature or poisoning,
  • When reacting to stress.
  • There is another reason for the development of cramping in children - uneven growth. Bones grow faster, muscle tissue is slower, muscle fibers cannot fully relax, which provokes increased tension.

    Why cramps the elderly

Seizures in the elderly can be explained by problems associated with the aging of the body. The vessels have lost their tone, chronic diseases have accumulated, and problems have appeared in the cardiovascular and digestive systems and endocrine organs. All this contributes to the violation of blood supply, and the lower limbs, which account for the main load, are primarily affected.

Muscle ischemia, a lack of nutrients, osteochondrosis, arthritis and arthrosis, gout, atherosclerosis, metabolic disorders - all these diseases are so common in older people that their presence is considered almost natural age-related changes.

Older people move less, but rarely limit themselves to food. Being overweight is another cause of leg cramps.

We can say that the cause of leg cramps in the elderly is all the factors that provoke cramping at a younger age, plus natural age-related changes. A slight difference: if healthy young people often have cramps after an increased load at night, then in older people they can appear at any time of the day and be so strong that they make it difficult to walk.

The following causes of seizures do not depend on the patient’s gender and age: overload due to sports or professional activities, chronic diseases, due to which metabolic processes are disturbed, oxygen starvation caused by natural conditions.

Leg cramps significantly impair the quality of life. If they appear during the day, then soreness negatively affects the mood, decreased performance, limited mobility. Cramps in the lower extremities at night provoke the development of insomnia, the nervous system suffers. When the cause of seizures is external influences - increased stress, hypothermia, an unbalanced diet, folk remedies and home methods will help to cope with them. If the cause of seizures is associated with pathological changes in the body, it is unlikely to get rid of them without the help of official medicine.

How to get rid of leg cramps folk remedies

Traditional medicine offers many recipes for eliminating and treating leg cramps, thanks to which you can quickly stop a spasm or lead to a remission of the underlying disease.

    Folk remedies against leg cramps:

    • Express method. With severe cramps, you can take a few crystals of salt in your mouth and hold it in your mouth. After 1-2 minutes, the spasm will disappear.
  • Lemon juice. The same action causes salted lemon juice - a spoon of juice must be held under the tongue. Quickly eliminates spasms of lemon juice if they rub the skin in the area of spasm.
  • Kvass Potion. Half a teaspoon of ordinary yeast is added to a glass of kvass, infused for 6 hours, then the drink is drunk during the day before meals in equal portions. To improve the taste, you can add honey. The course of treatment is a month.
  • Wormwood tincture. It will help from night cramps. A half-liter jar is filled with wormwood balls, poured with vodka, insist 15-20 days. Legs are rubbed daily before bedtime until the cramps completely disappear.
  • Honey and Kefir. Treatment should be resumed constantly: take medicine for 2-3 weeks, then take a break for 2 weeks. In the morning, on an empty stomach, it is necessary to eat a tablespoon of honey and drink kefir. These products restore the supply of trace elements spent at night, and during the day, convulsions will not bother.
  • Pharmacy chamomile potion. Bio raw materials are brewed as tea - 2 tablespoons per 0.5 l of boiling water. Chamomile tea is drunk after each meal and before bedtime. Some folk healers advise adding a few grains of salt and honey to it.
  • Celandine ointment. The external preparation is prepared according to the following recipe: fresh celandine is squeezed out and the juice is mixed with petroleum jelly in 1/2 proportions. Within 2 weeks, the ointment should be rubbed into the legs in those areas where cramps occur.
  • Yarrow and thyme tincture for external use. A mixture of herbs in equal amounts is filled into a bottle of dark glass, poured with vodka or alcohol, insisted for 2 weeks in a dark room at room temperature. Feet rubbed in the morning and evening for 2 months.
  • If home remedies do not help, you should seek the help of official medicine.

Treatment for leg cramps with drugs

There are no magic pills that completely eliminate leg cramps. Appointments are carried out only after establishing the causes that cause seizures.

Anticonvulsants can be distinguished, which are recommended most often:

    1. Valparin. Helps to cope with night cramps and restore a night's sleep, stabilize the state of the nervous system with epilepsy in children and adults
  • Diphenin. It is an anticonvulsant drug that relaxes muscles, reduces soreness and reduces the duration of seizures in epilepsy. Relieves spasms of nerve fibers caused by neuralgia.
  • Panangin, Asparkam, Mexarith, Propanorm. Restore the reserve of nutrients in the body. These funds replenish the supply of potassium and magnesium, the lack of which is a common cause of seizures. The drugs are well tolerated by older people.
  • Xanax. Eliminates emotional stress, insomnia and anxiety, has a calming effect. It is used in cases of seizures provoked by somatic diseases.
  • Keppra. This is a drug that helps eliminate leg cramps caused by brain diseases, including epilepsy. The drug helps suppress seizures caused by neural outbreaks.
  • Actinval. This drug is also from a number of antiepileptic, but it is prescribed for neuralgia, to eliminate convulsive syndrome, with diabetic neuropathy. It stops cramps and reduces the frequency of painful manifestations.
  • If cramps in the lower extremities are caused by varicose veins or thrombophlebitis, Troxevasin, Diosmin, Normoven and other drugs that restore trophic soft tissue can be prescribed. Heparin ointment belongs to the same group of medicines, only it is used as an external agent.

It is possible to replenish the supply of useful substances in the body (potassium, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin D) with the help of vitamin-mineral complexes: Complivit, Calcemin, Magne-6, Vitrum, Pyridoxine, Neurovitan and others. But even such "harmless" medicines should be prescribed by a doctor to determine exactly which vitamins and minerals should be replenished. Hypervitaminosis is just as dangerous as vitamin deficiency, and it can also cause leg cramps.

How to get rid of leg cramps with exercises

The following actions and exercises will help cope with leg cramps. The simplest action to relieve spasm is to pinch yourself for the place where the cramp occurred, or prick sharply with a needle. You can stand on the affected limb and transfer your weight to it, this also quickly helps to eliminate the pain.

To prevent the occurrence of seizures, you can perform the following sets of exercises:

    • After a busy day, if you had to constantly be in a sitting position, you need to get up, cross your legs and lean on the outside of the foot. Children characterize this position as follows: "stand like a club-toed bear." Then you should lower yourself to the full stop. Rise on socks and sharply fall. Toes bend and unclench with force. All exercises are performed 5-7 times.
  • To restore blood circulation, if spent all day on their feet, such exercises will help. You need to sit on a chair, stretch your legs in front of you and rotate your feet clockwise and against it. Then the feet rotate like this - toes towards and away from you. The next exercise - in turn, raise the knees, one foot resting on the floor. Both legs rest on a horizontal surface, you need to move your fingers intensively. The complex is completed by walking on the spot with combatant steps, raising the knee as high as possible. The multiplicity of the exercises is at least 7 times.
  • The following set of exercises for cramps also helps to quickly eliminate muscle soreness. Starting position - sitting on a chair, leaning on the back. The legs lift, stretch the socks, trying to ensure that the hips, legs and feet are on the same line. Then the fingers are parted, and the socks are pulled up. The pose is fixed for 5-7 seconds. They move from the starting position in feet from toe to heel, and the poses are fixed for 10-12 seconds. The starting position is to stand behind a chair, with your hands resting on the back. They rise to the toe of one leg, bending the second at the knee. In the same starting position, you need to lean on one leg, try to sit down, relaxing the other. Each exercise is performed 7-10 times.
  • How to get rid of leg cramps - look at the video:

If leg cramps are caused by organic problems, self-treatment and symptomatic medication will only worsen the condition. With the frequent occurrence of muscle cramps in the lower extremities, it is necessary to consult a doctor, they can be symptoms of diseases dangerous to health: thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, endocrine system dysfunction and the like.

    Muscles twitch after training: reasons

    Why do leg muscles hurt?

    Why do cramps occur?

From time to time, spasms occur in any person. If some part of the body stays in an uncomfortable position for a long time, then the muscles are stressed and a cramp occurs. You just need to change the position and gently massage the area that has fallen, and everything will quickly pass by itself. If leg cramps cause anxiety regularly, there is a serious reason to think about their causes (possibly starting thrombosis) and report your concerns to the doctor.

Leg cramped, or what convulsions say

A cramp is an involuntary muscle contraction, usually accompanied by severe pain. Cramping may vary. For example, there are cramps that look like stereotypical fast movements. For example, a nervous tick of the century. This type of spasm, called clonic, is the result of short-term contraction and relaxation of individual muscle groups. But there are tonic cramps that are more familiar to many of us. This is when the muscles harden for a few minutes, this condition is accompanied by severe pain. As a rule, such involuntary contractions are local in nature. Most often cramps the legs in the legs and calves. It happens that the hip and foot suffer. Leg cramps can occur at different ages, but more often people of the middle and older generation are exposed to them.

Perhaps one of the most common causes of leg cramps is a violation of the biochemical or electrolyte composition of the blood. An imbalance can occur due to a lack of calcium, magnesium and potassium in the body, as well as a lack of vitamin D. All these substances help regulate muscle activity and control nerve impulses. Why do we lose the necessary trace elements?

taking a number of drugs, for example, adsorbents and antacids used in the treatment of heartburn, can interfere with the full absorption of magnesium and calcium. And diuretics have a side effect of eliminating potassium and magnesium from the body.

under stress, the body begins to intensively produce the hormone cortisol. One of its side effects is impaired absorption of calcium in the intestine and increased excretion by the kidneys.

a lack of magnesium and calcium, as a rule, occurs during pregnancy, when the expectant mother needs these twice as many trace minerals as usual. Convulsions can develop against the background of the syndrome of the inferior vena cava, in which the movement of venous blood from the lower extremities worsens.

high protein intake also causes calcium deficiency. The fact is that the human body, for the most part, metabolizes glucose from carbohydrates, and not from fats, for energy purposes. If there is little glucose in the blood, then fat reserves are used. This, in turn, contributes to the appearance of ketones in the blood. With their excess, ketosis can develop, which increases the risk of kidney stones, since a large amount of calcium is excreted through the urine.

with severe sweating, the body loses the necessary potassium, so leg cramps quite often occur in hot weather or during high-intensity sports training.

  • Vitamin D deficiency is experienced by almost all northern residents because of the long winter and lack of sunlight. In turn, a lack of vitamin D leads to poor absorption of calcium.
  • Among the other reasons that lead to leg cramps are:

    • phlebeurysm
    • chronic circulatory disorders in the vessels of the lower extremities
    • thyroid disease
    • chronic renal failure
    • diabetes
    • radiculitis
    • flat feet
    • leg injuries and muscle damage
    • excessive exercise
    • hypothermia

    Emergency care for leg cramps

    • 1 Some people feel a cramp, so if you are one of them, then relax your leg in advance.
    • 2 If a spasm does occur, pull the toe of the foot toward you, then loosen the pull a little and pull again. If the cramp does not go away, then stand up, walk around a bit. It is better not on the carpet, but on the floor, and it is desirable that the legs are bare and the floor is cool.
    • 3 Relieve cramp will help a light massage of the reduced muscle. To enhance the effect, use a warming ointment.
    • 4 If the spasm persists, try pinching the spasmodic muscle or pricking it with a needle.
    • 5 After the cramp has passed, it is recommended to lie down a bit with raised legs (if possible) to ensure the outflow of blood and reduce the risk of recurrence of spasm.

    Leg cramps: prevention and treatment

You can get rid of unpleasant muscle spasms only by eliminating the cause of their appearance. If cramps in your legs cause you anxiety and anxiety, it is best to consult a doctor. To begin with, visit a therapist who can prescribe a general blood test to determine if all the main indicators are normal. If leg cramps are caused by any disease, then the next visit is to a specialist. But some methods of treatment and prevention of muscle cramps are available for home use.

Dietary adjustment. Leg cramps can be avoided by increasing the intake of foods rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D. Magnesium is mainly found in plant foods: dill, parsley, green onions, cereals, wheat bran, seaweed, legumes, dates , figs, dried apricots, prunes. A lot of calcium in fermented milk products: milk, cottage cheese, cheese, as well as in all types of cabbage and sesame seeds. Vitamin D is found in the liver of fish, especially cod, as well as egg yolk, butter, milk. But most of all contribute to the development of vitamin D in the skin walks in the fresh air in sunny weather. Well, potassium can be obtained from bananas, meat, poultry, fish and avocados. With a pronounced lack of trace elements, the doctor may prescribe medications containing multivitamin and mineral complexes. And, of course, it is recommended to quit smoking and exclude the use of caffeinated products (coffee and strong tea), since they provoke cramps.

The right choice of shoes. Wear high-rise shoes with tight ankle support. High heels are best replaced with small and stable (not higher than 4 cm). Then the legs will be less tired during the day, which means that cramps will happen less often.

Moderate physical activity. Do not overload your legs. There are muscle cramps. For example, those that appear in the legs during prolonged work squatting in the garden or in the gym after intense training.

Contrast baths or showers. These procedures are recommended every time before going to bed. It is useful to add decoctions of medicinal herbs with an anticonvulsant effect to water: mint, horsetail, valerian. These measures will improve the outflow of blood from the lower extremities and will prevent the appearance of seizures.

  • Self-massage legs. It’s easy to do. To do this, sit back, bend your legs slightly at the knees. Movements should be directed from the periphery to the center. To begin, do a few light strokes, then go on to slap and knead the area where it most often reduces the muscle. At the end of the massage, it is recommended to find the center point on the foot and massage it for several minutes.
  • If it brings legs at night: causes and treatment

Leg cramps: serious and not very serious

Leg cramps at night (when calves, feet, or toes in a dream) can occur for various reasons. It can be both congenital factors (such as serious hereditary diseases), and the most commonplace circumstances (improper posture during sleep or excessive love of coffee). Among the most common causes are the following:

    • varicose veins (in different stages),
    • lack of substances such as calcium and potassium in the body,
    • flat feet (or curvature of the foot due to injury or other circumstances),
    • Often leg cramps (and especially strong at night) occur due to an excess of caffeine and nicotine in the body,

The most serious causes of night cramps in the legs are diseases such as epilepsy, brain tumors, eclampsia, spasmophilia, as well as latent injuries, inflammatory and infectious and neurological diseases.

Leg cramps at night: causes and treatment

It is important to understand: in case of an illness, when it brings legs together at night, the reasons determine the treatment, which means that in each case the method of getting rid of the painful syndrome will be different. And the specialist doctor is also a specific one.

For example, if the cause of leg muscle cramps is in varicose veins, then the phlebologist will prescribe the treatment method. If the problem is revealed in the deficiency or overabundance of any substances in the body, it means that for some time your endocrinologist will become your “comrade”. With flat feet or curvature of the foot, an orthopedic surgeon will advise wearing special shoes or insoles, etc ...

And do not panic ahead of time! Often leg cramps occur for very ordinary reasons - for example, due to improper posture during sleep. In this case, ordinary rubbing massage helps to relieve muscle spasm.

Become charged: gymnastics against leg cramps

Exercise 1. In the morning stretch in bed. Stretch your legs, tightening the muscles, pull the socks towards you.
Exercise 2. In standing position, cross legs. Stand on the outer edges of the feet, stand for 10 seconds and return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise.
Exercise 3. Get on your toes, stretch up and fall sharply on your heels. Repeat several times.

Now the presence of seizures in the lower extremities complains a lot of people in the world. Seizures are capable of affecting older and older people; their legs often reduce, especially at night, in young people.

Health should not be neglected if leg cramps occur at night. The phenomenon is fraught with severe pain, it becomes a signal of trouble in the body. First of all, you need to find out the causes of the manifestation, then take care of the vessels of the lower extremities and the heart. The pathological manifestation is due to a variety of reasons, various methods of first aid and treatment are recommended. The article describes in detail how to help the patient, what to do with cramps in the lower extremities.

What happens with leg muscle cramps

If a convulsive contraction develops, reduces the lower limb, the muscle is severely spasmodic, unable to relax for a short time. A person experiences unbearable pain at this moment, is not able to move his spasmodic limb. Often cramps occur at night in a dream. When the legs are reduced, the muscle becomes very tense, blood stops flowing, oxygen starvation develops, which intensifies painful sensations. As a result, a vicious cycle develops. It is required to provide first aid to the victim in a short time, breaking the painful chain.

A common and common cause of leg cramps is a sharp hypothermia (if a person bathes in cold water), a sudden impulsive movement after muscle relaxation, mainly at night. Other causes of leg information are overwork, a sharp increase in body temperature. In addition to physiological causes, convulsions are caused by a number of diseases, occur in the pathology of the heart, blood vessels, endocrine system.

Giving the patient the right posture

If the patient began to complain of the development of a cramp, the reduction of muscle in the lower limb, the victim must be laid on a flat horizontal surface or sit down. It is recommended in cases when it comes to damage to the calf muscles or muscles of the foot. A simple tool will allow you to remove excess tension from the muscle, and provide the necessary help faster.

    Muscle unlocking

After the victim takes a comfortable horizontal position, an attempt to relieve muscle tension will be required. A number of manual techniques have been developed.

    1. Take the patient by the foot in the area of the fingers, press on them with your hand so that the fingers straighten towards the body of the victim. At the same time, the muscles of the calf, cramped, are maximally tensed. The patient will have painful sensations, after a short time the pain will quickly calm down.
    2. The patient is able to provide self-help in this way. You will need to sit with your legs horizontal. With fingers of both hands, grasp the fingers of the sore foot, pull strongly towards you. With the described method, the pain passes quickly - in the calves and foot area, if the action is done correctly.
    3. Athletes often use a proven method to relieve cramps in their lower limbs. Take a sharp object and sharply prick in the skin at the site of a developing cramp. A suitable item for manipulation would be a pin or needle.
    4. If the previous methods do not work, the leg is pulled, or it is not possible to apply actions, it is recommended to thoroughly stretch the spasmodic muscles.

    Massage the affected area

When the patient has released his leg, it is shown to carefully massage the leg muscles. This will relax the limb, relieve stress.

To start the massage, it is useful to make simple strokes, actively rub the skin. The massage ends with an intensive kneading of the muscle. At the end of the session, be sure to do stroking. This will lead to calming the muscle and relaxation, eliminating the pathological tone.

    Creating absolute peace

After removing the attack of convulsive contractions, the patient is required to rest. A person comes to himself from intense pain, the muscles of the leg and body rest and relax.

After some time, the patient begins to have severe aching pain in the place where convulsive contractions of the leg muscles were noted. The pain is reminiscent in nature of the sensations that arise in athletes after training. The appearance is due to the release of large quantities of lactic acid in the muscles, which, when excreted during muscle contractions, irritates the receptors, contributes to the appearance of pain.

    Phytotherapy

Lotions of gauze or a napkin dipped in infusions, decoctions of medicinal preparations are made on the damaged area on the legs. Herbal composition is allowed:

    • Red clover flowers.
    • Calendula officinalis flowers.
    • The leaves of rhubarb and its stems.
    • Yellow clover.

The ingredients are taken in equal proportions. A tablespoon of the vegetable mixture is selected, infused in boiling water in a water bath. Then remove the resulting mixture from the heat, leave to stand for an hour. After insisting, strain the broth using gauze. A gauze or cotton napkin is lowered into the resulting infusion, slightly wrung out and applied to the sore spot on the legs. It is required to treat a seizure attack within a few weeks.

    Alcohol tincture

If an attack of convulsions in the muscles of the lower extremity often develops at night, an alcoholic tincture of tansy flowers will become an effective folk remedy. They make vodka.

Pour 0.5 g of vodka into 100 g of dried and ground raw materials, leave to infuse for seven days. Then treat the patient with bouts of seizures in the lower extremities. For therapeutic purposes, at night before bedtime, the legs and feet are rubbed with a solution.

    How to prevent seizures

To prevent an attack of seizures in the lower extremities at night, it is shown to carefully monitor the water and electrolyte balance in the body. The rules should be followed:

    1. Drink plenty of fluids daily. If there are no contraindications for health reasons, you need to drink water up to 2 liters per day. Remember, carbonated drinks and liquids with caffeine are not taken into account, they can worsen the situation, causing body cramps.
    2. If possible, diuretics should be avoided. If it is recommended to be taken for medical reasons, the attending physician prescribes in the complex medications rich in potassium and magnesium, which restore the water-electrolyte balance in the body tissues, and the skeletal muscle tone is relaxed and normalized.
    3. Carbonated drinks with an excess of carbon dioxide and sugar contribute to the excretion of calcium from the body, causing a greater risk of seizures at night. It should limit the use of juices with pulp, the fiber contained in the composition promotes tissue dehydration, provoking a new attack.
    4. Alcohol, with a tendency to cramp, exacerbates the situation, especially in hot weather. Intensive dehydration of the body occurs, convulsions develop not only in the lower extremities, seizures of the whole body occur by convulsions.

    Exercise control

The amount of physical activity with a tendency to convulsive syndrome at night is recommended to be moderate. Overfatigue negatively affects the work of the vessels of the body, spastic painful muscle contractions develop. Constantly wearing high-heeled shoes is harmful.

For preventive purposes, you need to regularly perform small physical training complexes for the legs. It is permissible to use hiking, small runs, aerobic gymnastics for the lower extremities. Avoid swimming in excessively cold water - in open ponds and pools. Cold can trigger seizures.

A good prophylactic will be a daily light massage of places where night cramps are common, correctly first do light stroking and rubbing the muscles. To eliminate the spasm, it will be necessary to deeply and intensively wash the areas located above the spasticity site, then massage the affected area directly with light movements.

In the mornings and evenings it is good to have a warm shower.

    Metabolic control

It is necessary to ensure that the body maintains a sufficient content of important minerals and vitamins, especially calcium and magnesium. The abundance of potassium and magnesium contains dried fruits, dried apricots, raisins, bananas, apples. Fermented milk products are rich in calcium.

It is shown to take care of the presence of food products that reduce peripheral vascular resistance and prevent the appearance of seizures at night.

Be sure to control blood glucose, especially for people suffering from metabolic disorders and diabetes. To eliminate the cause of seizures, it is recommended to treat the main diseases - heart pathologies, metabolic disorders.

The site provides background information. Adequate diagnosis and treatment of the disease is possible under the supervision of a conscientious doctor.

Cramps are a state of continuous muscle contraction, not amenable to arbitrary relaxation. This condition causes a strong painful reaction, because at the time of convulsions the muscle experiences an acute lack of oxygen and nutrients. In addition, in a short period of time, it releases a large amount of waste products that irritate the nerve endings, causing pain.

According to statistics, cramps occur at least once in the life of every person. They become a cause of excitement with frequent repetition. In some cases, convulsions are a symptom of a disease such as epilepsy. In other cases, convulsions develop in healthy, at first glance, people.

Most often, convulsions are recorded in people engaged in the following occupation:

    • athletes,
    • movers
    • public transport controllers,
    • market traders
    • Water company employees
    • swimmers
    • surgeons.

    Interesting Facts

    • Leg cramps are a signal that a certain pathology is present in the body that caused their appearance.
    • A cold environment increases the likelihood of seizures.
    • In smokers, cramps occur 5 times more often than in those who do not smoke.
    • Proper first aid for cramps of the lower extremities prevents their recurrence in 95% of cases.

    Muscle structure

From the point of view of human physiology, the mechanism of contraction of muscle fibers is a long-studied phenomenon. Since the purpose of this article is to highlight the issue of leg cramps, it would be prudent to pay special attention to the work of only striated (skeletal) muscles without affecting the principles of smooth functioning.

The skeletal muscle consists of thousands of fibers, and each individual fiber, in turn, contains many myofibrils. Myofibrilla in a simple light microscope is a strip in which tens and hundreds of muscle cells aligned in a row are visible (myocytes).

Each myocyte on the periphery has a special contractile apparatus, oriented strictly parallel to the axis of the cell. The contractile apparatus is a combination of special contractile structures called myofillations. These structures can only be detected using electron microscopy. The main morphofunctional unit of myofibrils with contractile ability is the sarcomere.

The sarcomere consists of a number of proteins, the main of which are actin, myosin, troponin and tropomyosin. Actin and myosin in shape resemble interwoven strands. With the help of troponin, tropomyosin, calcium ions and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) there is a mutual rapprochement of the actin and myosin filaments, as a result of which the sarcomere, and accordingly the entire muscle fiber, is shortened.

    Muscle contraction mechanism

There are many monographs describing the mechanism of contraction of muscle fiber, in which each author presents his staged progression of this process. Therefore, the most appropriate solution would be to single out the general stages of muscle contraction formation and describe this process from the moment the brain transmits an impulse to the moment of complete muscle contraction.

Muscle fiber contraction occurs in the following order:

    1. A nerve impulse occurs in the precentral gyrus of the brain and is transmitted through the nerve to the muscle fiber.
    2. By means of the acetylcholine mediator, an electrical impulse passes from a nerve to the surface of muscle fiber.
    3. Impulse propagation throughout the muscle fiber and its penetration deep into special T-shaped tubules.
    4. Transition of excitation from T-shaped tubules to tanks. Cisterns are called special cell formations containing large amounts of calcium ions. As a result, calcium channels are opened and calcium is released into the intracellular space.
    5. Calcium starts the process of mutual rapprochement of actin and myosin filaments by activation and rearrangement of the active centers of troponin and tropomyosin.
    6. ATP is an integral component of the above process, since it supports the process of convergence of actin and myosin filaments. ATP helps to detach myosin heads and release its active centers. In other words, without ATP, the muscle is not able to contract, since it cannot relax before that.
    7. As the filaments of actin and myosin come closer, the sarcomere is shortened and the muscle fiber and the entire muscle contract.

    Factors affecting muscle contractility

Violation at any of the above stages can lead to both a lack of muscle contraction and a state of constant contraction, that is, cramps.

The following factors lead to prolonged tonic contraction of muscle fiber:

    • excessively frequent brain impulses,
    • excess acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft,
    • decrease in the excitability threshold of myocyte,
    • decrease in ATP concentration,
    • genetic defect of one of the contractile proteins.

    Excessively frequent brain impulse

The brain, namely its special department - the cerebellum, is responsible for maintaining a constant tone of each muscle of the body. Even during sleep, the muscles do not stop receiving impulses from the side of the brain. The fact is that they are generated much less frequently than in the wakeful state. Under certain circumstances, the brain begins to increase the impulse that the patient feels like a feeling of stiffness in the muscles. When a certain threshold is reached, the pulses become so frequent that they support the muscle in a state of constant contraction. This condition is called tonic convulsions.

Leg cramps due to increased brain impulse develop with the following diseases:

    • epilepsy,
    • acute psychosis
    • eclampsia,
    • head injury
    • intracranial hemorrhage,
    • cerebral thromboembolism.

    Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a serious disease characterized by the appearance of foci of synchronous impulses in the brain. Normally, various parts of the brain emit waves of different frequencies and amplitudes. In an epileptic seizure, all neurons in the brain begin to pulse synchronously. This leads to the fact that all the muscles of the body begin to contract uncontrollably and relax.

Distinguish between generalized and partial seizures. Generalized seizures are considered classic and match the name. In other words, they are manifested by muscle contraction of the whole body. Partial convulsive seizures are less common and are manifested by uncontrolled contraction of only one muscle group or one limb.

There is a special variety of seizures, called by the author who described them. The name of these seizures is Jackson's seizures or Jackson's epilepsy. The difference between this type of convulsions is that they begin as a partial seizure, for example, with an arm, leg or face, and then spread to the entire body.

    Acute psychosis
This mental illness is characterized by visual and auditory hallucinations caused by many causes. The pathophysiology of this disease has not been studied enough, however, it is assumed that the abnormal activity of the brain is the substrate for the appearance of symptoms of distorted perception. If medication is not provided, the patient's condition worsens sharply. Raising body temperature above 40 degrees is a poor prognostic sign. Often, generalized convulsions accompany an increase in temperature. Convulsions of only the lower extremities practically do not occur, but can be the beginning of a generalized attack, as with the Jackson seizure mentioned above.

In addition, the patient may complain that his legs are flattened due to distorted perception. It is important that you take this complaint seriously and verify that it is true. If the limb is in a state of cramp, its muscles are tense. Forced extension of the limb leads to the rapid disappearance of painful symptoms. If there is no objective confirmation of seizures of the lower extremities, the patient's complaints are explained by paresthesias (sensitive hallucinations) caused by acute psychosis.

    Eclampsia
This pathological condition can occur during pregnancy and poses a serious threat to the life of the pregnant woman and the fetus. In non-pregnant women and in men, this disease cannot happen, since the starting factor in its development is the incompatibility of certain cellular components of the mother and fetus. Eclampsia is preceded by preeclampsia, in which a pregnant woman has high blood pressure, swelling appears and her general well-being worsens. With high blood pressure (from an average of 140 mm Hg. pillar and higher) the risk of placental abruption increases due to narrowing of the blood vessels that feed it. Eclampsia is marked by the appearance of generalized or partial seizures. Leg cramps, as in the previous case, may be the beginning of a partial Jackson seizure. During seizures, sharp contractions and relaxation of the uterine muscles occur, leading to the detachment of the fetal site and the termination of nutrition of the fetus. In this situation, there is an urgent need for emergency delivery by caesarean section in order to save the life of the fetus and stop uterine bleeding in the pregnant woman.

    Head injury
Traumatic brain injuries can lead to leg cramps, but it should be recognized that this happens quite rarely. There is a pattern according to which the magnitude of the lesion corresponds to the severity of seizures and the duration of their manifestation. In other words, a brain contusion with a subdural hematoma is more likely to cause cramps than an ordinary concussion. The mechanism of seizures in this case is associated with the destruction of brain cells. In the lesion focus, the ionic composition changes, which leads to a change in the threshold of excitability of the surrounding cells and an increase in the electrical activity of the affected area of the brain. The so-called foci of epileptic activity of the brain are formed, which are periodically discharged by seizures, and then again accumulate a charge. As the area affected by the injury heals, the ionic composition of brain cells also normalizes, which inevitably leads to the disappearance of the focus of high convulsive activity and cure the patient.

    Intracranial hemorrhage
Intracranial hemorrhage is often a complication of hypertension, in which aneurysms form in the vessels of the brain over time (sections of thinned vascular wall) Almost always, intracranial hemorrhage is accompanied by loss of consciousness. With the next rise in blood pressure, the aneurysm ruptures and the blood enters the brain substance. Firstly, blood presses on the nervous tissue, thus violating its integrity. Secondly, a broken vessel for some time loses its ability to supply blood to a certain part of the brain, leading to oxygen starvation. In both cases, brain tissue is damaged either directly or indirectly by a change in the ionic composition of the intercellular and intracellular fluid. There is a decrease in the threshold of excitability in the focus of affected cells and the formation of a zone of high convulsive activity. Than ma
